Suzanne Louise “Sue” (Mason) Engelskirchen, age 93, ed away peacefully on May 1, 2025, in San Diego, California. Born on March 31, 1932, in Chicago, Illinois, predeceased by her late husband Donald G. Engelskirchen. Sue lived a long and vibrant life filled with dedication to her family, community service, and a ion for learning and adventure. She was a woman of remarkable energy and comion.
Her life was defined by her deep love for her family and her unwavering commitment to helping others. With the help of her husband Donald Engelskirchen she raised three daughters-Karen Myers, Kathy Kirchmeier, and Karol Evans-instilling in them the values of kindness, resilience, and service. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren Leanna Hansen, Donald Kirchmeier, and Karrie Gardenour; and her great-grandchildren Maddie Kirchmeier, Henry Hansen, Paige Kirchmeier, Beckett Kirchmeier, Dillinger Gardenour, Timmy Hansen, Oliver Gardenour, and Olivia Gardenour; sons-in-law Michael Kirchmeier and Thomas Evans, and many nieces and nephews.
Throughout her life, Sue gave generously of her time and talents to numerous organizations. She served as a Red Cross swim instructor and Girl Scout leader-roles that reflected both her nurturing spirit and love for the outdoors. In Rancho Bernardo, she became a pillar of civic engagement. As president of the Lady Lions Club for three years and an active member of Lions International in Rancho Bernardo, she helped lead initiatives that strengthened the local community.
Sue also volunteered as a docent at the Rancho Bernardo Historical Society where she shared her appreciation for history with visitors. Her interest in heritage extended to genealogy research and participation in the Rincon Del Diablo chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), where she celebrated ancestral connections while fostering civic responsibility.
Her zest for life was evident in everything she did. Sue loved swimming and camping-activities that brought her closer to nature-and she found joy in traveling to new places. A skilled golfer and avid bridge player, she cherished both competition and camaraderie. Whether tracing family roots or exploring new destinations with loved ones, Sue approached every endeavor with curiosity and warmth.
Those who knew Sue her as kind-hearted, thoughtful, helpful, and deeply loving. Her presence brought comfort and joy to those around her. She touched many lives through both quiet acts of generosity and spirited leadership
