Ruby “McCarroll” Birts OBITUARY

Ruby E. Birts, age 97, of La Jolla, CA, ed away April. 22, 2025, surrounded by her children.

Ruby was born in Los Angeles, CA, and moved to Sorrento Valley at the age of ten. Her parents Cloyce and Phebe McCarroll were the postmasters of Sorrento Valley and Del Mar for many years. Raised on a small farm, she went to La Jolla High School and graduated in 1946. She met her husband Bobby Birts at the First Baptist Church, in La Jolla, at a church function for servicemen and married shortly after graduation in 1946. They were married 50 years before his death and celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at the First Baptist Church on Genter Street in La Jolla. Ruby and Bobby moved to Bird Rock and had 5 children. Ruby followed him in his banking career, and they returned to their family home in Bird Rock in 1992. After Bobby’s death, Ruby volunteered at the VA Hospital, San Diego, for the next 30 years, helping patients in long-term care and the pharmacy. Ruby is survived by her children Jeanne, Susan, Bobby Lynn, and Allen; grandchildren Jason, Desiree, and Tabitha, and many great grandchildren.

Service was held at the Pacific Beach Christian Church. In lieu of flowers, donations to the

San Diego Humane Society or the VA Hospital would be appreciated.
