The 37th Annual Balboa Park Powwow celebrating Native American heritage is May 10-11 in Balboa Park. The family-friendly community event features Native American music, dance and art. Highlights include Native American singers, drummers, and dancers in traditional regalia from across the Southwest sharing their traditions and ing on customs.
Each day, there will be traditional activities such as Kumeyaay bird singing, gourd dancing, inter-tribal dancing and honoring of community leaders. There will also be dozens of local vendors and food booths serving fry bread and other Native American dishes. Native artists will sell hand-crafted goods, such as jewelry, clothing, blankets, and art.
The Powwow is hosted by the San Diego American Indian Health Center, a community clinic that serves San Diego County residents regardless of ethnicity, age or background. The center is set on reducing health disparities in local under-served populations. Rep. Scott Peters is slated to speak May 10 about San Diego American Indian Health Center’s service to the community.
The May 10 Powwow will honor the U.S. Military for their service, and the May 11 event will recognize mothers and grandmothers in celebration of Mother’s Day.
The event is from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. both days in Balboa Park at the corner of Park Blvd. and Preident’s Way.
