Re “S.D. City Council, residents lay into budget cut plans” (April 22): The mayor and City Council should adopt another strategy in reducing the budget. Rather than cutting libraries, they should cease construction of bike lanes. Many millions have been spent on lanes that few use.
I saw signage recently on Park Avenue near Robinson in east Hillcrest announcing new bike lanes. The removal of parking spaces will disadvantage small businesses and people with walking limitations who must walk farther to restaurants, shops and medical offices. A bike lane is also planned for the long-delayed widening of Bachman Place which rises steeply from Mission Valley to Mission Hills. A bike lane there is ridiculous given the precipitous pitch of this roadway.
City leaders should visit library branches and note the number of people of all demographics who use their services every day of the week, and then compare that to the number of cyclists on bike lanes. Huge difference!
