UPDATED:

Will Elton John’s May 9 Concert for Cures performance at Petco Park set an all-time record for a San Diego fundraising event after tickets go on sale to the general public Friday morning at 10 a.m.? That is a distinct possibility for the show, which comes two years after the legendary English singer-songwriter concluded his “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road: The Final Tour” farewell trek in 2023.

Elton John is un-retiring for a night to perform Curebound benefit concert at Petco Park

The pre-sale for tickets began Monday. Ticket prices for the general public range from $300 to $600 per seat. Ticket packages for tables of four range from $5,000 to $20,000. VIP tables for four to six people range from $40,000 to $75,000.

By comparison, ticket prices for Ed Sheeran’s sold-out 2023 Curebound “Concert for Cures” San Diego fundraising performance at The Shell were $250 to $400 for single tickets, $3,000 to $20,000 for tables of four, and $50,000 for front row or premier tables that seated up to six guests each.

The key difference is that the 4,000-seating capacity for Sheeran’s concert was only about one-tenth of the 40,000 or higher capacity for most full-stadium concerts held at Petco, the home ballpark of the San Diego Padres. Sheeran’s sold-out Curebound benefit concert raised $5.5 million for the 501c3 organization, which raises and invests funding for innovative adult and pediatric cancer research.

While the table seating on the field near the stage for John’s concert will likely reduce the capacity somewhat, a full house for his Petco performance could raise tens of millions for the nonprofit, which has thus far funded more than $45 million in cancer research for more than 140 study grants for more than 20 types of pediatric and adult cancers.

Apart from a March 26 concert at England’s 2,286-seat London Palladium with Brandi Carlisle to promote their new t album, the Petco Park Curebound benefit is John’s only announced show of the year. His previous Petco concert, on Nov. 9, 2022, drew a sold-out crow of 40,000.
