UPDATED:

Three construction workers were hit by a suspected drunken driver early Tuesday morning on a San Diego freeway on-ramp, California Highway Patrol officers said.

CHP Officer Mark Latulippe said the crash occurred shortly after 3:20 a.m. on the Market Street on-ramp to northbound Interstate 805 in Chollas View.

The driver, a 29-year-old woman, for unknown reasons veered her 2014 Ford Escape off the roadway and struck the workers, who were laying concrete on the on-ramp, said CHP spokesperson Officer Stephany Perez. After hitting the workers, the vehicle continued forward and struck a trailer parked on the shoulder of the road. A San Diego police officer witnessed the crash, Perez said.

The driver was given a DUI evaluation by CHP officers, and was subsequently arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

The three workers, all subcontractors for Caltrans, were transported to the hospital with moderate injuries, Perez said.

The freeway ramp reopened around 4:30 a.m., Latulippe said.
