High School Sports Roundup: La Jolla’s teams see mixed results in football and water polo

However, Bishop’s, La Jolla High and Country Day sweep their recent games in field hockey

La Jolla High and La Jolla Country Day schools returned from bye weeks in football Oct. 4, but The Bishop’s School came away with the only victory among the three.

Meanwhile, all three schools also were in action in boys water polo and girls field hockey.

Here’s a rundown of the results.

Football

Bishop’s 48, Francis Parker 0

The Knights hosted Francis Parker in their annual “Bish Bowl” homecoming game.

Bishop’s scored three touchdowns in the first quarter and four by halftime. The Knights gained 382 yards onoffense, while the defense held the Lancers (3-3) to 81 total yards and forced two turnovers.

“It was nice to get ahead early and then ultimately get some of our younger guys in, especiallyfor Bish Bowl because it is always a very fun and exciting atmosphere,” said Knights senior Ian Browne.

Bishop’s (3-2) next will take on Escondido Charter (0-6) on the road at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11.

Scripps Ranch 19, La Jolla High 15

La Jolla entered the Eastern League showdown on the road against the undefeated Falcons with a 4-1 record.

The Vikings had a 7-6 lead at the end of the third quarter, but Scripps Ranch (6-0) came back to take a 19-7 lead before La Jolla quarterback Hudson Smith threw a 32-yard touchdown to Lukas Grismer to for the final margin.

La Jolla was outgained 385 yards to 182, though Smith threw two TD es and Hank Hansen had 82 receiving yards.

La Jolla (4-2) will hope to get back on track in a road game against Mira Mesa (0-6) at 7 p.m. Oct. 11.

Santa Fe Christian 30, La Jolla Country Day 6

Country Day and Coastal League rival Santa Fe Christian both had more than 375 yards of offense, but the score wasn’t nearly as close.

The Eagles forced three turnovers at home, overcoming Torreys quarterback Jett Astephen’s 345 yards ing.

The Torreys (3-3) have lost three of their past four games but will aim to recover when they host Classical Academy (4-2) at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10.

Boys water polo

Cathedral Catholic 12, La Jolla High 6

La Jolla, the second-ranked team in the CIF San Diego Section and rated in the top 10 in MaxPreps’ national rankings, couldn’t stay with the Dons, who showed Oct. 2 why they are top-ranked in San Diego and in the top five in California and the nation.

La Jolla (16-4) next plays at home against Valhalla (8-6) at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8.

La Jolla Country Day 15, Ramona 13

After starting the season with four straight losses, the Torreys collected their fourth win in five games Oct. 5 against Ramona.

Country Day (4-5) hopes to build on the victory in a road game against Mira Mesa (5-8) at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9.

Bishop’s places seventh in Elite 8

The Elite 8 tournament over the weekend brought together eight top-rated teams in Southern California.

Bishop’s lost to JSerra, Oaks Christian, Sacred Heart and Cathedral Catholic before picking up a win in a rematch against Sacred Heart. The Knights finished seventh in the tournament.

Bishop’s (7-9) next has a road game against in-town rival La Jolla (currently 16-4) at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9.

Field hockey

Bishop’s 1, Cathedral Catholic 0

Bishop’s entered the game 12-1, with the lone loss to then-undefeated Cathedral Catholic. But the Knights edged the Dons in a rematch on the road Oct. 2 with MaxPreps’ No. 1 ranking in California on the line.

“Our team was super excited to have a rematch and get the chance to prove we were the betterteam,” Knights captain Natalie Marvin said.

Knights freshman Lola Conway scored the game’s only goal and increased her total to 25 goals on the season.

Bishop’s followed up the big win with a 7-1 victory Oct. 4 over University City.

The Knights (14-1) next play against Western League opponent Canyon Hills (13-3) at 4 p.m.Oct. 9.

La Jolla High 2, Cathedral Catholic 0

La Jolla replicated Bishop’s success against Cathedral Catholic with a shutout victory Oct. 4.

With the win, the Vikings moved up to the third spot in MaxPreps’ San Diego rankings and fourth in California.

La Jolla (7-2) next has a game against University City (3-6-3) at 4 p.m. Oct. 9.

La Jolla Country Day 1, Point Loma 0

After 10 days off, Country Day got back in action against Eastern League rival Point Loma on Oct. 2. The Torreys scored the only goal of the game in the first half and protected the lead the rest of the way.

The win improved the Torreys’ league record to 3-0, tying them for first place with Mission Bay.

Country Day (11-4) next travels to Clairemont (8-4) at 4 p.m. Oct. 9. ♦
