There’s no time like the middle of a hugely important, season-defining, three-game series for two opposing players to sit down for a podcast together, apparently.
Fernando Tatis Jr. and Mookie Betts, outfielders and star hitters for the Padres and Dodgers, met to record an episode of the Bleacher Report podcast, “On Base with Mookie Betts,” sometime between the Padres clinching a playoff berth after beating the Dodgers on Tuesday night, and Thursday night’s final game of the series between the two teams. The B/R Walk-Off Twitter tweeted that the pair were live on the Bleacher Report app at 11 a.m. Thursday.
It serves to mention that both teams are in an all-out, last-minute battle for the National League West division title. Even Betts knew how surprising it would be to fans listening or watching on the app, because he addressed the matter with Tatis. Jr.
“A lot of people in the chat and I’m sure in the comments and what not are thinking that, and saying that, it’s funny and kind of crazy that we’re doing a podcast right now in the midst of the race,” Betts said. “My take on it is … we’ll be fighting to win the game. That’s a given. That’s between the lines. But I think I may have said it before: The brotherhood that’s created playing this game is what you’ll always .”

The episode features discussion of Tatis Jr.’s upbringing, the Padres-Dodgers rivalry, food and other topics. Betts also took a moment to appreciate Petco Park, shouting out the food options at the Padres’ home stadium.
