This weekend, the trolley will do more than just transport people around San Diego.
The Urban Collaborative Project and the Metropolitan Transit System will be putting on interactive arts shows on trains and at select stations to raise awareness of the impacts that systematic practices like redlining have had on communities today.
Local artists from San Ysidro, Chula Vista, National City and southeastern San Diego will be invited to showcase their works, too.
Event organizers say this is a specialized effort they hope can harness art to educate locals on social equity and justice.
“Our marginalized communities have been separated by urban infrastructure and systemic racism, and although we fight the same battle, we activate in silos,” said Brian Pollard from U. “This event creatively expresses how successful and powerful we can be when we come together and work as a unified community.”
The programs will run from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. both days at Iris Avenue Transit Station, E Street Transit Center, 24th Street Transit Center, Park and Market, Euclid Avenue Transit Station and Jacobs Center.
Tickets for a free guided art performance while riding the trolley have already sold out. Each show will conclude at the Jacobs Center.
Each of the listed stations will also have an array of activities, art and cultural performances for people to stop by and watch.
