War protesters are on the wrong side

It’s a sad commentary when our youth, particularly those in academia, have no clue about the history of the Middle East and throw out words such as “apartheid,” “colonizers” and “occupiers” in reference to Israel (“Thousands of pro-Palestinian demonstrators at UC San Diego demand end to war in Gaza,” March 14, La Jolla Light).

Jews were present in that region for millennia.

It is even more sad that they are siding with the aggressors and against the victims. No protests for the elderly, young girls, abducted boys massacred on Oct. 7, but thousands upon thousands marching worldwide for those responsible for crimes of this magnitude.

Reserve closure is ‘deceitful and insulting’

UC San Diego’s illegal closure of the Scripps Coastal Reserve under the pretense of “environmental protection” is both deceitful and insulting.

For decades, this beautiful area had been frequented by visitors without incident. As a once-proud UC San Diego alumnus, the level of dishonesty used by the university to justify the restriction of public access is highly disturbing to me.

Many UC San Diego students and residents like myself came to the reserve to appreciate the serenity of undeveloped coastal land overlooking beautiful La Jolla Shores. However, it appears that Chancellor Pradeep Khosla would like to ensure that only he can enjoy these breathtaking views from his taxpayer-provided mansion.

It is imperative that the California Coastal Commission sends a strong message to UC San Diego that unlawful maneuvers like this will not be tolerated.
