SAN DIEGO SAN DIEGO — A Spring Valley resident was arrested Saturday on suspicion of fatally shooting a man in downtown San Diego Friday, police said.
Dajon Shingleton, 20, was found at his home early Saturday and was booked into jail on suspicion of murder.
The shooting was reported about 4:35 a.m. Friday on L Street and Sixth Avenue, near Petco Park, said San Diego Lt. Steve Shebloski.
One block north on Seventh Avenue, officers found a 29-year-old man lying on the sidewalk suffering from a gunshot wound to his upper body. The victim died before he could be taken to a hospital.
Investigators learned the suspected shooter was part of a group that had fled the area following the incident, Shebloski said. Some in the group were seen leaving in a white Jeep SUV and two others reportedly fled into a nearby parking garage.
Shebloski said the victim allegedly had a brief verbal confrontation with the suspect and of his group before the shooting.
“During that brief verbal exchange, the suspect produced a handgun and shot the victim at least one time in the upper body,” Shebloski said in a statement. The victim will be identified when his family has been notified.
